NEWS RELEASE 3 June, 1999 Major expansion programme at Science Photo Library The Science Photo Library (SPL) has announced a major expansion programme and a move to a new, larger building, in response to increasing demand for science, medical and technology images. According to SPL, the market for pictures of a scientific nature has grown by over 65 per cent in the last five years, with particular growth in creative design and high end commercial imagery. Michael Marten, founder and chairman of SPL said: "The diverse use of leading edge images from the fields of medicine, science and technology has provided major growth for us. These pictures are now being seen on anything from car advertisements to lifestyle features. There is growing popular awareness and interest in science and medicine and SPL works closely with scientific sources to make their images accessible." SPL has invested £200,000 in refurbishing its new home which will provide the optimum environment for viewing, researching and manipulating pictures. It houses a special projects area and a light controlled, dust-free environment, for digital image manipulation. The latest telecommunications equipment, ISDN 30, has been installed which is fast and flexible. SPL is the world's leading photo agency specialising in science, medicine and technology pictures. It is an independent, privately-owned company and its collection includes more than 120,000 images. SPL's strengths are in its unrivalled spread of images and its emphasis on quality. SPL was established in 1979 and the company has grown consistently since then currently employing 45 people, many of whom are science graduates.
