Science Photo Library donates prizes for "Visions of Science" competition

The £5,000 prize money for this year's Visions of Science photography competition has been donated by the Science Photo Library.

This important competition, which is sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals in association with The Daily Telegraph, has awards for photographs in four categories.

Maria Storey, marketing & communications director says: "Science Photo Library has the world's leading collection of science pictures. We believe the competition is important to encourage and develop photographers. It also allows the stunning world of scientific imagery to be broadcast to a wider audience."

The judges will be looking for the most striking, original and creative science and medical images.

A first prize of £750, second prize of £350 and third prize of £100 will be awarded in each category - science close-up, science through the lens, science concepts and science as art. In addition there is a £500 Novartis award for the best healthcare image and a £200 prize for the best entry from an under 21 year old.

Judges for this year include Bob Bodman, picture editor of The Daily Telegraph; Professor Raymond Clark, president of the Royal Photographic Society; David Derbyshire, science correspondent of The Daily Telegraph; Dr. Adam Hart-Davis, photographer and TV science presenter; Eric Jenkins, British Institute of Professional Photography; Dr. Jennie Jewitt-Harris, Director of Corporate Affairs, Novartis; Garry Swann, Institute of Medical Illustrators.

The Visions of Science competition, now in its second year, is open to professional and amateur photographers, scientists, researchers and health professionals, as well as anyone with an interest in science.

The winning pictures will be published nationally and exhibited throughout the UK.
