Images In Action

Science Photo Library (SPL) has a deserved strong reputation for being the leading provider of specialist science images. However, our images are often much more widely used than might be expected.

Here are some recent examples of SPL images in action.

McCann-Erickson

Clive Bray, says:
"When we came up with the idea of Natural Phenomena as the theme for the Dowding & Mills calendar a colleague suggested we check out the Science Photo Library for relevant subject matter. Good suggestion. Great selection of images. Good quality and realistic costs too. What was also very useful was the very informative supporting detail which was just what we needed to write the 'interesting' caption copy for the calendar. In short SPL was a very good find and we will definitely use them again. In fact we already have used some images in the Report and Accounts for the same client."

Duncan Gray, art director, says:
"The image needed for the WWF Forests ad was difficult to find. It required a photograph that showed a child with leukaemia in a hopeful and very positive light. There would always be an element of luck as the subject does not throw up many choices. But the Science Photo Library's web site was visited on recommendation and an excellent match to our brief was found. The shot chosen managed to have great style, composition and the right level of emotion for what was a challenging subject matter. The web site is now a first port of call."

Kate Paul & Stuart Pantoll, D&AD student award winners: Poster advertising

As part of their award the students of Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College won a placement at Ogilvy for a few weeks, where they continued to work on their poster advertising project. The poster was then supplied to Maiden Outdoor, who kindly donated 100 free poster sites. Science Photo Library donated the image.

Lou Siroy, deputy features picture editor, says:
"We were looking for an image to illustrate an article on head lice. I initially went to SPL and found a good selection. There were two which had the louse with the egg, which was integral to the piece, and I went for the more sinister one as it looked like an alien creature."

Bob Haime, managing director, says:
"SPL was the obvious place to go for the picture we wanted. Service was immaculate and friendly, we got the picture really quickly and it was a pleasure to deal with them all round".
